The sonorous calls that are sometimes heard in the Swedish highlands are known locally as ‘Kulning’. These high-pitched vocalizations are uttered by mountain women to heard cattle, scare away bears and communicate to one another at long distances. In this work I have drawn on these cries of my ancestors to create a ‘studio mountain’. The metaphor of long distance communication is intended as an expression of my overall practice – calling into the void such that a response may or may not be received. Once again, the artist trades on a cryptic symbolism loaded with psychological potentialities. One could posit that the singer is like a dog chewing on a bone, producing sounds with the undesirable fleshiness of the inner body. On the other hand, the dog’s actions are framed through the lens of high culture, as its chewing is compared with the tonalities of opera. This slippage problematises the perceived difference between human consciousness and animal instinct. The balls however move in a way that defies the laws of nature. As the game unfolds, a male and a female narrator read from TE Lawrence’s famous memoir ‘Seven Pillars of Wisdom’ 1922, an account of British military adventure on the Arabian Peninsula during World War I. The spoken words embody the concept of ‘the great game’, a phrase denoting power rivalry between global super-powers, and as pertinent to the current era as to the preceding two centuries. “I had dreamed, at the City School in Oxford, of hustling into form, while I lived, the new Asia which time was inexorably bringing upon us. The visual aspects such as stave lines and the varying dotted notations are re-imagined as aspects of virtual space and contemporary buildings and spaces. This act of mimicry is performed through facial expressions that connote derangement, while also making an oblique reference to the language of dance—which often embodies animalistic movements. Salsjo takes advantage of this convention to articulate complex emotional states by performing manic bursts of laughter that are suddenly frozen to echo the lifelessness of the cow. While the symbolism of the animal remains open ended, the artist’s gesticulations suggest a combination of entrapment, lunacy and ecstasy. The scene prompted me to ask the question, did the people have a say in what went on here? What were their words? This led me to the wonder and question what happened before the time l stood here filming. For this work, I organised an unfurling of fabrics from the top of the bridge. The gesture was intended to evoke many things - the ways in which people dry clothes, tongues rolling, party play whistles, empty banners or flags. Through this gesture l wanted to signal an obscure relationship between language and meaning, or gesture and signification. Inspired by local commercial advertising, and by personal experiences in the Footscray area, the artist posed a question to members of the local community - what does it mean to be one hundred per cent real human? These responses, which were drawn from a wide range of cultural perspectives, were recorded and transposed into text panels and video animations. What they reveal is a striking ensemble of ideas, concepts, insights and feelings. Human existence is considered in relation to tradition and change, to the present and the future, in small gestures of kindness and empathy, and in the arcane possibilities of advanced spiritual potential. On the opposite wall, the phrase ‘100% Real Human’, being the signature title of the show, appears across three fabric banners. However, rather than weaving these words into existence, the artist has unpicked extant swathes of fabric to enable viewers to see through the words to the reflective surface behind. In doing so, Salsjö creates a contemplative yet partially obscured mirror as the frame for this piece. Having captured the various comments and conversations that were prompted by her question, Salsjö further transposed the words into visual forms and musical elements. In this instance, the artist developed woven fabric totems and colour banded poles, which appear throughout the exhibition. As an abstract representation of language, the fabric totems interweave multi-coloured textiles into a single and entwined unit, while the poles appear as segmented bands of colour reminiscent of bar codes and Morse Code cyphers. These pieces were later presented to a local Afro-Cuban percussion ensemble who responded to the pieces by creating drumming rhythms and vocalised ‘scat’ solos, thus returning the project to its origins in the spoken word. Salsjö’s ‘Lingual Net’ is a striking response to language, for it considers that ubiquitous communicative mode as more than a device for stories and ideas. Rather, language is presented as a complex web that is intertwined with all aspects of life. Further still, our sense of what it means to be human is revealed as something that can never be fully uncoupled from the tools and techniques that we use to formulate and express it. Her starting point is text; in this case, words that Salsjö feel characterise her artistic process, such as ‘random’ and ‘deconstructed’. Drawing upon her training as a musician, Salsjö has assigned notes to letters of the alphabet so that each word becomes a musical unit. These fragments are notated in repeat phrases across large graphite line-drawings which resemble mind maps. When Salsjö had the opportunity in 2015 to visit the National Schools Complex in Havana (a UNESCO heritage site commissioned by Fidel Castro in the early 60s), she felt a strong connection between her music and the architecture. The School of Ballet building in particular, with its interplay of vaults and domes, suggest to Salsjö a sense of organic flow underpinned by structure. Inspired by the curved archways at the entrance to the School, the artist worked her notation charts into eight pieces of violin music, basing the time structures of the music on her own intuitive correlations between sound and built form. In this video music students perform her compositions under the decaying brick and terracotta domes of the now abandoned Ballet school. Her composition process is rooted in illustrative graphic scores inspired by contemporary architectural works, and her works have been presented in galleries worldwide alongside the likes of Dr Christian Thompson AO.
